The Kadiwéu Indians, who live in Mato Grosso do Sul, in Brazil’s West, are caught today between the decadence brought on by contact with the white world and the attempt to maintain their culture. In the 20s, the French anthropologist Levi Strauss was the first to document this warrior tribe, still completely isolated. Based on his research, I made a film in 1999 called “Brava Gente Brasileira” (Brave Brazilian People), a fiction film that had its international debut at the Toronto Festival.  Between research and rehearsals we have 13 hours of material on the part the kadiwéu played in the film. The objective of the documentary is to take up the story of the tribe, in particular the life of 5 of the characters who took part in the film, reconstituting their stories for the nine years that have passed. “Four and a Half Stories” is a philosophical voyage in the tradition of Claude Levi-Strauss.
