The
soundtrack of this movie explores its own viewpoint although it moves
along with the images. At times it follows the development of the
narrative of the Portuguese characters, while at others it reflects
the indigenous universe. But it is by no means pseudo-indigenous music.
The selection of symbol-instruments from the Western music of the
colonizers, particularly stringed instruments such as the viola and
the 'cello refer back to this European universe, creating a certain
distance from the clashes between the colonizers and the indigenous
people that occur in the course of the film. In general, the soundtrack
seeks to underline and spotlight certain nuances in the performances
and shots through adding narrative elements that are less location-specific
- which is a basic characteristic of music - offering a multiplicity
of readings.
