young, around 30 years old, naturalist and cartographer, graduated from Coimbra. He likes to draw and has read Rousseau and Voltaire. He believes in the good savage and in the possibility of integration of the two worlds: that the natives can become "civilized". He was hired by the governor of Mato Grosso, a well educated Portuguese aristocrat - D. Luis de Albuquerque e Caceres - whom he met in Coimbra, to perform a large project mapping out the region (cartography and report on the flora and fauna).
