Around 60 years
old, son of a wealthy Brazilian family, born in São João D'El
Rey, where he had formal schooling with priests. He leaves to
the remote interior, stays in the army in Vila Bela. Because of
his education, he is nominated as the new governor for the Fort
Coimbra with the objective of making peace with the natives. He
leaves his wife, with whom he has no children, in Vila Bela and
heads off to the Fort where he is set against Pedro and a troop
that has already suffered attacks from the Guaicurus. He has a
Guaná wife and crossbred children. He defends the whitening of
the population through the miscegenation with the natives. He
heard about "illuminism", but did not have access to the books.
He knows only some things of Voltaire, because the governor of
Vila Bela is a profound admirer of Voltaire and brought one of
his works to the stage.
