When we first arrived at the reserve in 1995, an Evangelical church was already there. It was small, made of wood, coordinated by a Portuguese lady who lived there and a German pastor who showed up every now and then. This church was extremely important for the community. It was the place where they found nurses and medical assistance when Funai ("Fundação Nacional do Índio" – Indian National Foundation) neglected them in this and other areas.

All of them had a respectful relationship with the Church, specially with the Portuguese missionary, a certified nurse. These missionaries were also the first ones to translate several prayers and Christian chants to the Kadiwéu language.
Nearly 20 years later, the current situation is quite different. Virtually all Kadiwéu consider themselves Evangelical, and there are five churches built in the reserve. Some of them fairly conservative, forbidding dances and any ritual. The first missionaries' Church is now a masonry building, and its pastor is one of the characters of the movie (Hilário Silva), who was responsible, together with Reinaldo (also interviewed) for a translation of the Holy Bible to the Kadiwéu language.
