From the rituals shown in "Brave New Land", the only one still used in 1999 is the one with the part when the girl menstruates. This huge party (when they say the girl has "partied", it means that she menstruated) requires the girl to remain sitting while making no movement during a whole day so nothing disturbs her and thus she can turn herself into a strong woman, while the older women sing using an embroidered cloth. The more the cloth is embroidered with gemstones and beads, more important is the girl's family. The other rituals, almost all of them linked to war, no longer exist. Through these 15 years, the relationship with the "girl's party" has largely changed, though.

"The party is a moment that is, you know, really beautiful for the girls. It's the moment when they'll remain separated, they'll have their moment, their face and body will be painted. They'll have clothes different from all the others. She'll have a cloth, fully decorated, which will be fanned. It's a beautiful, delicious moment, a moment of party for the village. There'll be a lot of people. There'll be dance, singer, right? I'll bring a singer. 'Cause I told her, besides the party, the box, the flute, I'll bring a singer there to have a ball later. 'Cause now it's normal to have balls in the village, right, when there is a party."

"I think it's 'cause I was just telling the girls that it's no longer the same, at least for the Girl. I don't see it any more, you know. Then the girls were telling me there was one, but they say the girl was wearing a dress used in fifteen year old parties. And then I said "so this wasn't a party for the girl, 'cause a party for the girl is to be in the way they taught us to be", right. So they can't break the tradition. I wanna do it for this reason, to show them I haven't ever forgot my culture, my habits, although living in the city." (Edna Marcelino)
