Well known for her work in television for the last two years, Maria Flor has begun making films and Almost Brothers is her second. She performs the role of Juliana, Miguel’s daughter. Breaking the law, defying her father, she goes up into the shantytowns attracted by Funk dances and meets Deley, an area drug-dealing lieutenant, and has an affair with him. Rewrites the relationship between the middle class and the shantytown in a new light.. .
What is your character in the film like?
Juliana is a middle class girl, the daughter of a congressman. She is rebelling against her father because he was once a revolutionary and is now a congressman. So she starts to get involved with a drug dealer; that’s her way of confronting her father about his values.
What moved you most about the film?
The whole film is very moving. But what I found most interesting was the way Lúcia established a parallel between the prison (with its regular convicts and political prisoners) and the shantytown of today. I think she looks at the problem of criminality from its roots.
